Pune: Pune traffic police have recommended suspension or cancellation of around 1,700 driving licences as part of a tougher campaign against drunk driving and serious road violations.
A stronger deterrent
The move takes enforcement beyond routine fines. Losing driving privileges can have a much greater impact on repeat or dangerous offenders and is intended to reinforce road discipline across a city struggling with heavy traffic and accident risk.
Authorities are expected to process cases under applicable legal procedures, meaning a recommendation is not automatically the same as a final cancellation order.
Why this matters
Pune’s fast growth has sharply increased pressure on roads. Enforcement against intoxicated and dangerous driving is one part of improving safety alongside better junction design, public transport and pedestrian infrastructure.
