Raipur, October 17, 2026: India Women opened their T20 International series against Zimbabwe with a four-wicket victory after a tense batting recovery led by Deepti Sharma and debutant Niki Prasad. Zimbabwe posted 114 for five, but India’s chase began disastrously before the pair restored control. India reached the target in 15.4 overs to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
Zimbabwe set India 115 to win
After an early dismissal, Zimbabwe rebuilt through Kelis Ndhlovu and Modester Mupachikwa. Ndhlovu made 42 from 44 balls, while Sharne Mayers contributed an unbeaten 43 from 33 deliveries. India restricted the visitors to 114 for five, leaving a target that appeared manageable on paper.
India stumble to 19 for four
Zimbabwe’s bowlers quickly transformed the contest. Nyasha Gwanzura took three wickets, dismissing Smriti Mandhana, Anushka Sharma and Shafali Verma, while Michelle Mavunga removed Harmanpreet Kaur. India were reduced to 19 for four and suddenly faced the possibility of losing a match they had been expected to control.
Deepti and Niki turn the match
Deepti Sharma’s 49 brought composure and experience to the chase. Niki Prasad, playing her first T20 International, remained unbeaten on 39 and showed remarkable calm under pressure. Their partnership allowed India to move away from survival mode and regain control of the required scoring rate.
Why the victory matters
The win was particularly significant because it came in Smriti Mandhana’s first match as India’s new full-time T20I captain. Although the top-order collapse exposed a weakness that the team will need to address, the recovery demonstrated valuable depth and flexibility. Niki’s debut also provides a positive selection option for upcoming matches.
Zimbabwe’s positives
Despite the defeat, Zimbabwe’s bowlers created a genuine contest by removing four Indian batters cheaply. The performance gives the visitors reasons for encouragement ahead of the next match, even as their batters will seek a stronger total. Competitive starts and sustained pressure will be crucial if they are to level the series.
What to watch in the second T20I
India will look for more stability at the top of the order, while Zimbabwe may try to reproduce their early bowling success. The series provides both sides an opportunity to test combinations and develop younger players.
