Five New Centres of Excellence Approved for India’s Classical Languages

NEW DELHI: India is expanding institutional support for classical-language scholarship with approval for five Centres of Excellence covering Assamese, Bengali, Marathi, Pali and Prakrit.

Research and preservation get institutional backing

The centres are expected to support research, documentation, preservation, digitisation and advanced study. Such institutions can also help bring manuscripts and older literary material into accessible academic collections.

Language preservation increasingly involves both traditional scholarship and digital tools, including searchable archives and high-quality digitisation.

Impact extends beyond universities

Strong language research centres can support teachers, translators, historians and cultural institutions while creating resources that are useful to the public.
