China’s 77th National Day Begins as Beijing Highlights Development, Technology and National Unity

BEIJING — China is marking its 77th National Day on October 1, 2026, as the country enters a new phase of economic and technological planning. The anniversary comes after a week of closely watched economic announcements covering manufacturing, infrastructure, science and technology, housing and financial support.

The National Day marks the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949. It is one of the country’s most important public holidays and begins an extended holiday period that traditionally brings a major increase in domestic travel, tourism, shopping and cultural activity.

Why this year’s National Day is being closely watched

The 2026 anniversary arrives at a significant point for China’s economy. Official manufacturing data released on September 30 showed the manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index rising to 50.1 in September from 49.8 in August, returning to expansion territory after two months below the 50 threshold. A separate private survey also showed stronger factory activity.

The improvement is being watched alongside continued pressure in areas such as property and domestic demand. China’s policymakers have recently announced targeted financial support, including expanded lending facilities for technology and private businesses and measures intended to support the housing market.

Technology remains a central national priority

Science and technology have become a major part of China’s economic strategy. The government has outlined priorities for 2026-2030 that include artificial intelligence, integrated circuits, advanced machine tools, quantum technology, biotechnology and other emerging fields.

Officials have also emphasized the importance of basic research and the conversion of scientific discoveries into commercial applications. Research and development spending exceeded 3.92 trillion yuan in 2025, according to China’s Ministry of Science and Technology.

The technology agenda means that National Day messaging is taking place against a wider policy effort to strengthen China’s industrial and scientific capabilities.

Infrastructure and regional development

China has also announced plans to accelerate development of modern water networks during the 2026-2030 period. The government says stronger water infrastructure will support economic and social development, improve water security and strengthen the resilience of cities and rural areas.

Railway infrastructure is another major part of the country’s development model. Four new high-speed rail sections opened shortly before the holiday, improving connections in northern, central, northwestern and northeastern China.

Holiday travel becomes a major economic indicator

The National Day holiday is economically important because millions of people travel across China at the same time. Tourism destinations, airlines, railways, hotels, restaurants and retail businesses typically see substantial changes in activity.

This year’s holiday is particularly relevant because policymakers are looking for stronger household consumption. A rise in domestic travel and spending could provide an important indication of consumer confidence, although holiday spending alone cannot fully measure the health of the wider economy.

China’s manufacturing sector enters the holiday with mixed signals

The September PMI improvement provides a positive industrial signal, but the figures also show differences between large and smaller companies. Some smaller manufacturers remained below the 50 mark, suggesting that the recovery has not been evenly distributed.

Global demand for high-tech goods and products linked to artificial intelligence has supported parts of China’s industrial sector. At the same time, domestic demand and the property market remain important issues for policymakers.

International attention on China’s economy

China remains a major part of global supply chains, and developments in its economy have implications for commodity markets, shipping, manufacturing and international trade. The country’s technology and clean-energy industries are also closely connected with global markets.

Recent U.S.-China diplomacy has added another layer of uncertainty and opportunity. President Donald Trump said on September 30 that he had discussed the release of political prisoners with President Xi Jinping during their September meeting. The two governments are also continuing discussions on trade and tariffs. These developments could influence the environment for Chinese exporters and multinational companies.

National Day and the next phase of China’s development

The 77th National Day therefore comes at a time when China is balancing several major priorities: maintaining economic growth, supporting domestic consumption, stabilizing the property market, strengthening technology, expanding infrastructure and managing international economic relationships.

For ordinary citizens, the holiday is primarily a period for travel, family activities and public celebrations. For businesses and investors, however, the week’s economic data and policy announcements provide a series of indicators to watch as China moves into the final quarter of 2026.

What comes next

Attention will now turn toward October economic activity, holiday consumption figures, industrial production and upcoming policy decisions. The government has indicated that it will continue implementing measures designed to support growth while advancing longer-term technology and infrastructure goals.

The combination of a modest improvement in factory activity and continued policy support will make the fourth quarter important for assessing whether China’s economic recovery becomes broader across households, businesses and regions.
