New Delhi: The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has taken action against three major e-commerce platforms over the online sale and advertising of a product marketed as “Cyclosinone Herbicide”. Amazon and Flipkart were each fined ₹10 lakh, while JioMart was fined ₹5 lakh.
According to the CCPA orders, the regulator directed the platforms to stop the sale and misleading advertisements of the product and conduct a self-audit to identify listings that may violate the law or create risks for consumers. The orders were issued in September 2026. Read the CCPA orders.
Why did the CCPA intervene?
The proceedings followed a complaint forwarded by the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare after a representation from the Crop Care Federation of India. The Agriculture Department told the CCPA that “Cyclosinone” was not included in the Schedule to the Insecticides Act, 1968, while the product was being marketed as a herbicide online.
The regulator also noted that the listings did not adequately disclose the active ingredient, precise chemical identity and relevant licence or registration information. Such information can be important when consumers are buying regulated agricultural products.

Consumers should check the product name, active ingredient, registration or licence information and directions for use before purchasing agricultural chemicals online. They should also be cautious about broad safety claims unless the listing provides verifiable regulatory information.
