FORT MCMURRAY: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has fast-tracked the proposed Pacific Link oil pipeline, a project designed to move up to one million barrels of oil per day from Alberta to Canada’s Pacific coast.
Canada seeks to reduce US dependence
The 1,250-kilometre pipeline could give Canadian producers greater access to Asian markets and reduce their heavy dependence on the United States. The project is estimated to cost between C$25 billion and C$31 billion.
Carney designated the pipeline a project of national interest, allowing it to move through an accelerated federal process.
Alberta vote adds political urgency
The decision comes ahead of an October 19 Alberta vote on whether to hold a referendum on separation from Canada. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith supports the pipeline while saying she intends to vote against separation.
