VANCOUVER: Canada will invest an additional C$1.2 billion to strengthen marine protection and conservation enforcement as tanker traffic increases along its coasts.
Monitoring and forecasting to expand
Prime Minister Mark Carney said the funding will support improved seabed mapping, better weather forecasting and expanded capacity to monitor marine traffic.
The investment comes as Canada seeks to expand its role as a global energy exporter while also addressing environmental and navigation risks associated with increased tanker movements.
Energy expansion meets conservation challenge
Canada is simultaneously advancing new infrastructure intended to diversify oil exports toward Pacific markets. That makes marine safety and environmental protection increasingly important to communities, regulators and Indigenous groups along shipping routes.
