NAGPUR, October 2, 2026: Brazilian aerospace company Embraer and Indian conglomerate Mahindra have selected Nagpur, Maharashtra, as the proposed location for a final assembly line for the C-390 Millennium military transport aircraft in India. The proposal could bring a major aerospace manufacturing project to the city, although the assembly line remains contingent on the Indian Air Force selecting the C-390 for its Medium Transport Aircraft programme.

The companies are discussing infrastructure requirements with the Maharashtra government. If the project proceeds, Nagpur could gain another major industrial opportunity linked to India’s growing aerospace and defence-manufacturing ecosystem.

Reuters reported that Nagpur was selected as the proposed site and that the decision is dependent on the outcome of the Indian Air Force procurement process.

What the C-390 project could mean for Nagpur

A final assembly line would be a significant industrial facility requiring specialised engineering, logistics, quality control and skilled personnel. Aerospace projects can also generate demand among suppliers that provide components, tooling, maintenance services and other industrial support.

Nagpur’s central location is relevant to logistics and connectivity. The city already has an airport, road and rail connections and an established industrial base. A large aerospace project could build on those existing strengths if the proposal reaches the implementation stage.

The project is not yet a confirmed production line

The proposed facility should not be described as an operational aircraft factory yet. The project depends on the Indian Air Force procurement decision. Until a contract is awarded and the necessary agreements are completed, infrastructure planning remains part of a potential industrial programme.

This distinction is important because large defence projects involve multiple stages, including technical evaluation, procurement decisions, contractual arrangements, industrial planning and regulatory approvals.

Potential employment and skills impact

If the facility moves ahead, demand could emerge for engineers, technicians, quality specialists, logistics professionals and trained production workers. Local educational institutions could potentially benefit if training programmes are aligned with aerospace manufacturing requirements.

The wider economic effect could extend to small and medium-sized suppliers. However, the scale of employment and investment cannot be estimated reliably until the project is formally approved and detailed plans are announced.

Why aerospace companies look at industrial clusters

Aerospace manufacturing depends on reliable infrastructure, skilled labour, transportation and quality systems. Companies also benefit from proximity to suppliers and institutions capable of supporting research and training.

For Nagpur, a major aerospace facility could strengthen the city’s diversification beyond traditional sectors. It could also increase the need for specialised industrial infrastructure and supplier development.

What happens next

The immediate next step is the Indian Air Force procurement process. If the C-390 is selected, Embraer and Mahindra would have to move from site selection to detailed implementation planning, including infrastructure, investment, workforce and supply-chain arrangements.

NewsNationOnline’s Nagpur News section will track developments. Official information about defence procurement is available through the Ministry of Defence.

Source note: Nagpur’s selection is a proposed site decision and does not itself confirm final aircraft procurement or construction of the assembly line.
