Traveling to the United States for tourism, study or employment generally requires selecting the correct immigration category before applying. Visa rules differ according to the purpose of travel, nationality and individual circumstances.
Tourist and business visits
B-1 visas generally cover certain temporary business activities, while B-2 visas are for tourism, visits and certain medical purposes. Some travelers can instead use the Visa Waiver Program if eligible and authorized through ESTA. A visitor visa does not generally authorize employment in the United States.
Student and exchange visas
F-1 is commonly used for academic study at approved schools, M-1 for certain vocational programs, and J-1 for approved exchange visitor programs. Applicants should first confirm school or sponsor eligibility and obtain the required documents. Some students and exchange visitors face restrictions on employment and other activities.
Employment visa categories
Temporary work classifications include H-1B for qualifying specialty occupations, L-1 for certain intracompany transfers and O-1 for people meeting extraordinary-ability criteria. Each has distinct requirements; many require an employer or petitioner to submit an application or petition before the visa interview.
Application and official sources
Start with the US Department of State visa categories and USCIS temporary worker information. The appropriate process depends on visa type and circumstances. Visa issuance does not guarantee entry: US Customs and Border Protection makes the admission decision at the port of entry. Review our US passport guide for related travel-document advice.
