REAL ID Enforcement Begins: New Travel ID Requirements for U.S. Domestic Flights

Starting May 7, 2025, the United States has officially implemented REAL ID enforcement, requiring all air travelers aged 18 and above to present a REAL ID-compliant identification for domestic flights. The mandate is now in effect under the guidance of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

What is a REAL ID?

A REAL ID is a state-issued driver’s license or identification card that meets federal security standards established by the REAL ID Act of 2005. These IDs are typically marked with a gold or black star in the upper right corner.

Acceptable Alternative IDs

If a traveler does not have a REAL ID, they may still travel using any of the following federally accepted documents:

U.S. passport or passport card
DHS Trusted Traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI)
U.S. Department of Defense ID (including IDs for dependents)
U.S. Permanent Resident Card (Green Card)
Photo ID issued by a federally recognized tribal nation
Foreign government-issued passport

What Happens If You Don’t Have a REAL ID?

Travelers without a REAL ID-compliant form of ID may face delays and additional identity verification at TSA checkpoints. In some cases, they may be denied boarding. Passengers are strongly advised to arrive early to allow time for manual checks if necessary.

ID Requirements for Children

Children under the age of 18 are not required to present identification when traveling with an adult on domestic flights.

How to Get a REAL ID

To obtain a REAL ID, visit your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) with proper documentation that proves your identity, Social Security number, and residential address. Due to increased demand, scheduling an appointment in advance is recommended.
