China and the United States have agreed to establish a new China-US artificial intelligence dialogue to discuss AI-related risks and benefits.
A joint outcome document released after Xi Jinping’s US visit said the two sides will exchange views on artificial intelligence. A separate communication channel for AI-related incidents is also planned.
AI moves into formal bilateral dialogue
The agreement places AI alongside trade and other major subjects in the formal China-US relationship. The two countries are simultaneously competing in advanced AI while also exploring ways to manage risks.
The next round of the AI dialogue is expected in November, according to China’s State Council Information Office.
Broader China-US understanding
The AI agreement was one of eight outcomes identified by China following the Xi-Trump meeting. The leaders also addressed trade, military crisis communication and counternarcotics cooperation.
