As Hajj 2025 approaches, Saudi Arabia is implementing unprecedented measures to protect pilgrims from the extreme desert heat, expected to exceed 50°C this summer. Following last year’s tragedy, where over 1,300 pilgrims died from heat-related causes, the Kingdom has taken significant steps to enhance safety, health, and crowd management for millions of pilgrims expected to arrive in early June.
🔥 Key Heat Safety Preparations
Saudi Arabia’s Hajj Minister, Tawfiq al-Rabiah, told AFP that heat mitigation remains the government’s top priority this year. To prepare for the searing temperatures:
- Over 50,000 sq. meters of shaded walkways have been added.
- 400+ misting and cooling stations are being installed at Mina, Arafat, and Muzdalifah.
- Heat-reflective surfaces have been applied on main walking routes.
- Movable sunshades at Arafat now offer misted protection and deploy in under 150 seconds.
🤖 AI Surveillance and Real-Time Monitoring
For the first time, AI technology will be used to monitor crowds and enhance emergency response:
- AI-powered drones will provide live feeds and thermal data to command centers.
- Systems will detect overcrowding, heat stress zones, and alert medical teams in real time.
🏥 Medical and Emergency Response Boost
- Deployment of 50,000+ medical professionals and emergency technicians.
- New 200-bed emergency hospital in Mina and 3 field hospitals with 1,200+ beds.
- 900 ambulances, 11 evacuation helicopters, and 71 mobile response points.
- Public awareness campaigns on hydration, heatstroke symptoms, and sun exposure.
🛂 Permit Enforcement and Pilgrim Safety
After last year’s incident where 80% of deaths involved unauthorized pilgrims, Saudi Arabia is strictly enforcing permit regulations:
- Use of AI and facial recognition to monitor access zones.
- Unauthorized pilgrims may face fines and up to 10-year bans.
Minister al-Rabiah urged: “Having a permit is very crucial. We urge all Muslims to follow official channels.”
🌙 The Last Summer Hajj for Years
This year’s Hajj, starting on June 4, 2025, will be the last summer pilgrimage until 2041. The Islamic lunar calendar will move Hajj into cooler seasons from 2026 onward. Saudi Arabia is confident its mix of technology, logistics, and humanitarian services will ensure a safe pilgrimage for all.
