Gandhi’s South African campaigns provide the clearest early example of how Satyagraha moved from an idea into an organised method of political resistance.
The law that triggered resistance
The Transvaal authorities introduced legislation requiring registration and identification of the Indian population. Gandhi opposed the measure and argued that the community should resist it rather than comply quietly.
The Empire Theatre pledge
On 11 September 1906, a mass meeting was held at the Empire Theatre in Johannesburg. The Gandhi Heritage Portal identifies this gathering as the advent of Satyagraha.
Participants pledged, with God as witness, to oppose the discriminatory legislation. The commitment was significant because it placed personal responsibility at the centre of the campaign.
Imprisonment became part of the strategy
Gandhi did not present imprisonment as something that would automatically end a campaign. Instead, accepting punishment without retaliating became part of the method.
The Gandhi Heritage Portal records that Gandhi was sentenced to two months’ simple imprisonment in January 1908 after refusing to obtain the required registration.
The method continued to evolve
The South African campaigns involved negotiations, protests, arrests, imprisonment and community mobilisation. Gandhi’s understanding of Satyagraha changed through these experiences.
The term itself became established in 1908. The Gandhi Heritage Portal notes that it developed from Maganlal Gandhi’s earlier formulation “Sadagraha.”
Why South Africa is important to Gandhi’s story
When Gandhi returned to India in 1915, he brought with him a method that had already been tested through years of political activity. His later Indian campaigns would adapt Satyagraha to local disputes involving farmers, workers and colonial policies.
