Mahatma Gandhi’s public life was closely connected to a disciplined daily routine. Prayer, walking, spinning, correspondence, reading, writing and meetings occupied much of his time.
Early mornings and prayer
Prayer and reflection formed an important part of Gandhi’s routine. His prayer meetings often included readings and devotional passages from different traditions.
Walking
Gandhi regularly walked for exercise and as a way of travelling between villages and meetings. His long walks became especially visible during political campaigns.
The spinning wheel
Gandhi devoted time to spinning and encouraged others to do the same. He connected the activity with khadi, village employment and self-reliance.
Writing and correspondence
Gandhi maintained an extensive correspondence and wrote regularly for publications including Young India and Harijan.
Simple living
Food, clothing and personal possessions were deliberately kept simple. Gandhi treated personal habits as part of his broader experiments with self-discipline.
Why his routine matters
Gandhi’s daily habits were closely connected to his political and social philosophy rather than being separate from it.
