GTA 6 Packs More Than 600,000 Animations as Rockstar Art-Directs Every NPC

Rockstar Games has created more than 600,000 animations for GTA 6 so that the ordinary people walking the streets of its fictional state, Leonida, behave like real individuals rather than background extras. The detail comes from a cover feature in Edge magazine, in which Rockstar explains that a dedicated team art-directed every non-player character (NPC) in the game.

Multiple outlets reporting on the same material say that figure is roughly double the number of animations in Red Dead Redemption 2 and more than ten times what GTA 5 shipped with.

A dedicated team for GTA 6 NPCs

According to Creative Bloq, which summarized the Edge interview, Rockstar set up a Los Angeles-based team of writers, directors, and producers whose job was to make the pedestrians of Leonida, the game’s take on Florida, feel individually realized.

Instead of relying on a small set of generic crowd behaviors, the team gave NPCs personality traits. These cover things like temperament and aggression, where a character lives, what they have witnessed, and how the player has treated them. Each district also has its own mix of residents and professions, so a beach neighborhood should feel different from a downtown business area.

How players might notice the difference

Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, told Edge that the team kept asking how real people would react in different situations. One of the questions he described was simply, “Who’s going to be aggressive?” The idea is that when a player causes trouble, the crowd should not respond as one block. Some people may run, some may film, some may confront the player, and a few may reach for a weapon.

Because NPCs remember how they have been treated, repeated actions in the same area could also change how locals behave. That kind of reactive world has long been a Rockstar goal, and 600,000 animations gives the studio a much larger toolkit to show it.

Why the GTA 6 animation count matters

Open-world games often feel lifeless when the same few walking cycles and reactions repeat on every street. By hand-directing behaviors at this scale, Rockstar is betting that a believable crowd will make Leonida feel lived-in, which has been one of the series’ biggest selling points since GTA 3.

The approach also stands out at a time when many studios are experimenting with AI tools to generate content. Creative Bloq’s Tom May argued that GTA 6 looks like an effort to raise the ceiling of what a crafted game world can be, rather than simply producing more content faster. Rockstar North has separately said GTA 6 will not use generative AI, according to PC Gamer and other outlets covering the feature.

Excitement for the game is running high ahead of launch. MarketWatch reported this week that some fans are planning to take time off work on release day, with one industry figure telling IGN earlier this year that “a lot of people will be calling in sick on Nov. 19.”
