The MPAA Rating System and Hollywood’s Battle Over Movie Content

The Motion Picture Association introduced a voluntary film-rating system in 1968 as Hollywood moved away from the Production Code. The system classified movies according to content and intended audience.

Ratings and creative freedom

The rating system gave filmmakers greater freedom to explore adult subjects while also providing parents with information about potentially sensitive material. Its standards have changed over time as social attitudes and filmmaking practices evolved.
