China’s services sector expanded at its fastest pace in three months in September, according to the private RatingDog China General Services Purchasing Managers’ Index. The index rose to 51.6 from 51.4 in August, remaining above the 50-point growth threshold.
Reuters reported that stronger new orders, including orders from overseas markets, helped lift services output. The data adds to signs that activity in parts of China’s economy improved toward the end of the third quarter.
Services economy remains important
Services have become an important source of employment and domestic demand as China works to reduce dependence on property investment. Tourism, transportation, technology services and consumer-facing businesses will be closely watched during the upcoming National Day holiday.
Travel could provide another test
China’s extended Golden Week is expected to generate heavy travel volumes, although recent data suggests consumers remain careful about how much they spend. NewsNation Online will continue tracking China’s holiday economy and international travel trends.
