The CDC said its national death count is based on mortality data reviewed by the National Center for Health Statistics. Pennsylvania has separately reported four measles-related deaths, creating a difference between state and federal tallies.

CDC officials said the national count can change as additional information is reviewed and that the agency is working with state epidemiologists on a standard definition for measles-related deaths.
