Jack Smith Tells US Senate He Will Not Be Silenced by Prosecution Threats

WASHINGTON: Former U.S. special counsel Jack Smith told senators Tuesday that he would not be silenced by threats of prosecution as he defended his conduct during his investigation of President Donald Trump.

Reuters reported that Smith appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee after Republicans questioned whether his investigations into Trump exceeded his authority. Smith rejected allegations of wrongdoing and defended the decisions made by his team.

The hearing reflects an ongoing political and legal dispute over the federal investigations that preceded Trump’s return to the White House. Statements made at the hearing represent the positions of the participants and do not by themselves resolve the underlying legal questions.
