NAGOYA, Japan — India’s Nitesh Siwach won silver in the men’s Greco-Roman 97kg wrestling competition at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on October 1 after losing 4-0 to Japan’s Yuri Nakazato in the final. The result added another medal to India’s growing tally and gave the host nation another wrestling gold on a busy day of finals.

Siwach reaches the gold-medal bout

Siwach navigated the 97kg draw to reach the final, putting himself in position to challenge for India’s next wrestling gold. Nakazato, however, controlled the decisive bout and finished with a 4-0 victory. Siwach therefore left the competition with silver.

For India, the result was another podium finish in a Games campaign that has produced medals in sports ranging from shooting and athletics to archery, sailing and squash. Wrestling remains an important part of India’s Asian Games programme, particularly because the sport offers multiple medal opportunities across weight categories.

Japan’s Yuri Nakazato takes gold

Nakazato’s victory contributed to a strong Japanese wrestling session. Nonoka Ozaki also won women’s freestyle 62kg gold, while Olympic champion Nao Kusaka earned silver in men’s Greco-Roman 77kg after reaching the final.

The home results mattered to Japan’s wider medal campaign because the host nation was approaching its historical Asian Games medal record. Every late-stage wrestling final therefore carried importance both for individual athletes and for the overall medal table.

India’s busy October 1

Siwach’s silver came on a particularly productive day for India. Manu Francis and Prince Noble won silver in men’s skiff sailing, while Harshita Tomar and Shital Verma won sailing bronze. India’s men’s and women’s squash teams also secured bronze medals, and Ganesh Mani Ratnam added individual compound archery bronze.

India’s men’s cricket team also reached the T20 final against Pakistan after defeating Sri Lanka by 124 runs. The men’s hockey team advanced to its final after beating Pakistan 4-3 in a dramatic semifinal.

Why the silver matters

A silver medal at the Asian Games is a major continental result because the wrestling fields bring together athletes from countries with established international programmes. Siwach’s run to the final places him among the podium finishers at one of Asia’s largest multi-sport competitions.

The result can also provide valuable experience ahead of future world championships and the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic cycle. Asian Games results do not by themselves guarantee Olympic selection, but they form part of an athlete’s competitive record.
