NAGOYA, Japan — Jasprit Bumrah set the tone for India’s dominant Asian Games men’s T20 semifinal against Sri Lanka, taking two early wickets as India defended 169 and bowled Sri Lanka out for just 45. The 124-run victory sent India into the gold-medal match against Pakistan.
Bumrah strikes immediately
Bumrah’s opening spell created pressure from the first over. He removed Sineth Jayawardena for a duck and then dismissed Sohan de Livera without scoring. Two early wickets meant Sri Lanka had to rebuild while facing India’s attack on a difficult batting surface.
The early damage also allowed India’s other bowlers to attack rather than protect a modest target. Fielders stayed aggressive, and Sri Lanka struggled to build a partnership long enough to change the momentum of the chase.
India’s batting had already built a strong total
India reached 169 for seven after Ishan Kishan produced an unbeaten 80 from 46 balls. Fifteen-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi added 38 on his Asian Games debut, giving India an important contribution at the top of the order.
The pitch was not straightforward for batting, with visible cracks requiring players to adapt their stroke selection. Kishan’s ability to remain at the crease through the innings proved especially valuable as India built a total Sri Lanka could not match.
Sri Lanka collapse for 45
Once Bumrah had made the early breakthrough, Sri Lanka struggled to recover. Run-outs compounded the pressure and Nuwanidu Fernando’s 15 was the highest score in the innings. Abhishek Sharma then took two wickets in five deliveries, accelerating the collapse.
Sri Lanka were all out for 45 in 9.5 overs. The margin of 124 runs underlined how far apart the two sides were in the semifinal, despite the match being played in knockout conditions.
India set up Pakistan final
Pakistan reached the final by defeating Bangladesh in a rain-shortened semifinal. That match was reduced to 13 overs per side because of a wet outfield. Pakistan won by six wickets after Abdul Samad remained unbeaten on 30 from 15 balls.
The result created an India-Pakistan final for the Asian Games men’s T20 gold medal. Both sides are guaranteed a medal, but the final will determine whether India or Pakistan leaves Nagoya with the championship.
India’s wider Asian Games campaign
The cricket result came during a busy medal day for India. The country collected medals in sailing, wrestling, squash and compound archery, while the hockey team also reached its gold-medal match after beating Pakistan 4-3.
