NAGOYA, Japan — India’s men’s quadrant sepaktakraw team reached the semifinals at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on October 1, guaranteeing the country another medal. The result added to a productive day for the Indian contingent, which also saw medals in sailing, wrestling, squash and compound archery.
Semifinal place secured
In a knockout event, reaching the last four guarantees at least a bronze medal because losing semifinalists share the third position. India’s progression therefore increased the country’s confirmed medal count while leaving the team with an opportunity to fight for a place in the final.
Part of a wider Indian campaign
The sepaktakraw result came on a day when India collected medals across sports that receive very different levels of international attention. Sailing and wrestling produced silver medals, both squash teams took bronze, and Ganesh Mani Ratnam won individual compound archery bronze.
India’s cricket and hockey teams also reached their gold-medal matches. The two results guaranteed at least two additional silver-or-gold medals.
Why the result matters
Sepaktakraw is strongly associated with Southeast and wider Asian sporting culture, and Asian Games competition provides one of its most important international stages. India’s semifinal appearance gives the team an opportunity to compete against established regional programmes.
