PUNE, October 2, 2026: Ten children were hospitalised after a suspected chlorine gas leak at the swimming pool of the Government Regional Sports Complex in Yerawada, Pune. The incident occurred on Wednesday night while the children were at the pool, and police have begun an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The children, aged between 13 and 15, reportedly complained of nausea and vomiting after the suspected leak. They were taken to a hospital and kept under observation. Police said their condition was normal later, while investigators examined the handling and storage of chlorine at the facility.

The Indian Express reported that the incident took place around 9 pm and that authorities were checking whether prescribed safety measures were followed.

Why chlorine safety matters at swimming pools

Chlorine is widely used to disinfect swimming-pool water, but it must be stored, handled and dosed carefully. Exposure to concentrated chlorine gas can irritate the eyes and respiratory system and may cause symptoms depending on the amount and duration of exposure.

Swimming facilities therefore require procedures covering chemical storage, ventilation, staff training, emergency response and maintenance. The exact cause of the Yerawada incident will have to be established by the inquiry rather than assumed from the initial reports.

What the police are investigating

Police are examining how chlorine was stored and handled at the swimming facility and whether required safety precautions were followed. Investigators may also collect statements from children, staff and other people present, inspect equipment and review facility records.

The investigation is important because a chemical incident at a public sports facility can affect more than one person. Understanding the source of the exposure can help determine whether it was an isolated equipment problem, a handling error or another issue.

Why children were kept under observation

Medical observation allows clinicians to monitor people after suspected chemical exposure even when symptoms improve. The appropriate treatment depends on the substance, exposure route and clinical condition. Families should follow medical advice rather than relying on social-media claims about treatment.

Safety lessons for public facilities

Public swimming pools need clearly documented chemical-management procedures. Staff should know how to respond if a chemical alarm occurs, where emergency exits are located and how to prevent people from entering an affected area. Appropriate personal protective equipment and ventilation are also important where chemicals are stored or used.

Regular inspection can identify damaged containers, faulty dosing systems or ventilation problems before an incident occurs. Training should not be limited to senior staff because emergencies can happen during any shift.

What parents should know

Parents whose children use swimming facilities can ask operators about emergency procedures and chemical-safety arrangements. If a child develops breathing difficulty, persistent vomiting, severe coughing or other concerning symptoms after suspected chemical exposure, medical attention should be sought promptly.

Parents should also avoid spreading unverified information about the cause of an incident while an inquiry is underway. Accurate information helps authorities investigate and helps other families make informed decisions.

What happens next

The police inquiry will determine the circumstances of the incident and whether any negligence or procedural failure occurred. Authorities may also review safety protocols at the facility. The children who were hospitalised are expected to remain the focus of medical follow-up where required.
