KINGSTOWN — Four people were killed and four others injured in a shooting in St Vincent and the Grenadines, police said, as authorities launched a manhunt for those responsible. The violence occurred in Green Hill, near the capital Kingstown, in a Caribbean nation known for its tourism industry.
Multiple victims
Police said victims with gunshot wounds were found at different locations, including on a public road and inside a parked vehicle. Two of the injured people remained hospitalised after the attack.
Police investigation
Acting Police Commissioner Trevor Bailey said officers were investigating the motive and looking for suspects. No arrests had been announced in the initial reports.
Separate killing under investigation
Authorities were also examining another killing that occurred the following day to determine whether it was connected to the earlier shooting. Investigators have not established a link.
Gang violence concerns
National Security Minister St Clair Leacock condemned the violence and acknowledged concerns about gang-related crime. At the same time, officials have stressed that St Vincent and the Grenadines remains a generally peaceful country.
Impact on a tourism economy
St Vincent and the Grenadines relies heavily on tourism. Serious violent crime can create concerns among residents and visitors, although isolated incidents should not automatically be interpreted as representing overall conditions across the country.
Police response
Investigators are expected to examine the crime scenes, interview witnesses and review any available surveillance footage. Ballistic and forensic evidence may also be important in identifying suspects.
What happens next
The investigation will need to establish whether the victims knew the attackers, whether the incidents were connected and what circumstances led to the shooting.
