SEOUL: A diplomatic dispute between South Korea and Ukraine has intensified after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy publicly disclosed the transfer of two North Korean prisoners of war to South Korea.
Seoul says confidentiality was breached
South Korean President Lee Jae Myung says the disclosure violated a nondisclosure understanding and has demanded an apology. Ukraine disputes the claim that such an agreement existed.
The soldiers were transferred to South Korea in September after being captured while fighting alongside Russian forces, according to reporting by the Associated Press.
North Korea policy complicates dispute
Seoul is seeking to improve relations with Pyongyang, making the handling of North Korean defectors and prisoners politically sensitive. At the same time, South Korea has maintained humanitarian support for Ukraine.
