TOKYO: Japan’s 17-year-old Shin Ohashi broke the men’s 200m breaststroke world record at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, delivering a landmark performance in front of the home crowd.
Ohashi clocked 2:04.83 in the final at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre on September 24. The performance made him the first man to break the 2:05 barrier in the event, according to Olympics.com.
The teenager’s victory was his second gold medal of the Games and became one of the defining moments of the swimming programme.
Ohashi’s record came during a highly competitive swimming schedule featuring athletes from China, Japan and other leading Asian swimming nations. The competition has also highlighted a group of teenage swimmers making an impact at senior level.
The world-record performance has added to Japan’s strong showing as hosts of the Aichi-Nagoya Games. Swimming competition is being staged in Tokyo, while events across the wider Games are taking place at venues in Aichi and Nagoya.
The Asian Games continue until October 4. Full swimming results and medal information are available at the official Aichi-Nagoya website and Olympics.com.
