Jalna: A caution from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has brought consumer protection in the digital gold market into focus. In its November 8, 2025 advisory, SEBI stated that digital gold and e-gold products fall outside its regulatory framework and do not benefit from securities-market investor protections.
Why warn consumers without restricting the trade?
Advocate Mahesh Dhannawat has raised a question for policymakers: “If authorities warn the public about risks in digital gold, why does the government not stop these transactions or establish clear safeguards for consumers?” This is a policy question, not a claim that the government has banned digital gold.
Buyers should check the provider’s credibility, gold ownership and storage arrangements, and redemption conditions. SEBI has not said that every digital gold holding will disappear.
