AI Alerts and ‘Plan Bee’: Railways Says 255 Elephants Saved From Train Collisions

India: Northeast Frontier Railway says 255 elephants were saved from possible train collisions between January and September 2026 through a combination of AI-based alerts, ‘Plan Bee’, speed restrictions and enhanced vigilance.

Rail tracks in parts of Northeast India pass through or close to elephant habitats and traditional movement corridors, creating a persistent challenge for both railway safety and wildlife conservation.

Early warning gives crews time to react

Technology-based detection can alert railway staff when elephants approach tracks, allowing trains to slow down. The system works alongside speed controls, monitoring and coordination between railway and forest authorities.

The 255 figure is Northeast Frontier Railway’s assessment of interventions that prevented collisions during the January-September period.
