GUWAHATI: Indian Railways is advancing a major infrastructure expansion around Guwahati that includes new railway lines, a second Saraighat rail bridge, station redevelopment and a mega coaching complex.
Capacity and connectivity at the centre
The projects are intended to increase train-handling capacity and improve passenger connectivity in one of Northeast India’s most important railway hubs. The second Saraighat bridge is particularly significant because the Brahmaputra crossing is a strategic link in the regional network.
Station upgrades and additional operating infrastructure can also help manage growing passenger and train volumes as rail connectivity expands across the Northeast.
National significance beyond Assam
Better rail capacity around Guwahati strengthens links between the Northeast and the rest of India. The benefits will depend on timely execution, integration between individual projects and minimising disruption during construction.
