North Korea Tests Intermediate-Range Missile as Korean Peninsula Tensions Rise

SEOUL: North Korea says it has conducted a test of an intermediate-range strategic missile as tensions rise on the Korean Peninsula following a disputed landmine explosion in the Demilitarized Zone.

Kim Jong Un oversaw the drill

North Korean state media said leader Kim Jong Un supervised the test. South Korea’s military said it detected a ballistic missile that travelled more than 700 kilometres toward waters off the North’s east coast.

Pyongyang claimed the weapon has advanced manoeuvring capabilities. Such technical claims have not all been independently verified.

Border dispute adds to tensions

The launch comes after Seoul blamed North Korean mines for injuries to South Korean soldiers in the DMZ. Pyongyang denies deliberately planting mines targeting the troops.
