MUMBAI: With the monsoon withdrawing, Mumbai’s massive road-concreting programme is returning to the streets. BMC had prepared contractors to restart work in the first five days of October, with roughly 138 km of roads and hundreds of individual stretches still requiring completion.
590 roads remain unfinished
The civic project aims to replace vulnerable asphalt stretches with concrete, but the scale of work means residents may again face barricades, diversions and construction bottlenecks while contractors race through the dry season.
The central test is not simply how many kilometres are concreted. Drainage levels, utility ducts, junction finishing, footpaths and restoration around work sites will determine whether completed roads actually improve everyday travel.
A narrow construction window
Mumbai’s road agencies have only a limited dry-season window before the next monsoon. Coordination between BMC, traffic police and utility agencies will be critical to preventing repeated digging and avoidable congestion.
