AKOLA: Maharashtra Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule has warned banks, credit societies and moneylenders against pressuring farmers for loan recovery in areas declared drought-affected.
Farmers asked to report harassment
During a visit to Akola, Bawankule directed banks not to insist on repayment of instalments from farmers in drought-hit regions and asked affected farmers to report instances of harassment to the administration.
He said the government intends to ensure that relief reaches eligible farmers and indicated assistance would be provided before Diwali.
Credit pressure becomes part of drought response
For farm households facing crop losses, debt recovery can compound distress. Clear written instructions to lenders, grievance mechanisms and consistent implementation across districts will determine how effective the protection is.
