Latvia Election Puts Security and Cost of Living at Centre of Baltic Politics

RIGA: Latvia’s parliamentary election has placed security and household costs at the centre of political debate in one of the European Union and NATO’s easternmost member states.

Coalition talks expected

An exit poll reported by Reuters placed Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs’ centrist United List ahead, but Latvia’s fragmented political landscape means coalition negotiations are expected to determine the composition of the next government.

Exit polls are preliminary measurements rather than final election results.

Russia remains a major security concern

Latvia borders Russia and Belarus and has a significant Russian-speaking population. Defence, border security and support for Ukraine have therefore featured alongside inflation and living costs in the campaign.
