Kenya Highway Crash Kills 17, Most of Them Pilgrims Heading to Prayer Site

NAIROBI: At least 17 people were killed in a multi-vehicle crash on Kenya’s highway to Mombasa, with most of the victims reported to be pilgrims travelling to a prayer site.

Crash occurred in Salama area

Police said the collision happened after midnight in the Salama area when a truck attempted to overtake another vehicle. A van carrying pilgrims was among the vehicles involved.

The van driver and 16 passengers died at the scene, according to police. Kenya’s National Transport and Safety Authority said the stretch is a known road-safety black spot.

Authorities urge safer driving

The agency called on motorists to avoid dangerous overtaking and maintain lane discipline. The crash again highlights road-safety challenges involving speed, vehicle condition and infrastructure.
