Thousands Flee Ebola-Hit Camp in Eastern Congo, Raising Fears of Wider Disease Spread

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO: Thousands of displaced residents have fled an Ebola-affected camp in eastern Congo, raising concerns that population movement could make the already severe outbreak harder to contain.

Public-health teams face tracking challenge

Reuters reported that residents left after soldiers entered the camp. Large-scale movement from an outbreak area can complicate contact tracing, vaccination and monitoring of people who may have been exposed.

Congo’s current Ebola outbreak has already become the country’s largest on record, according to government data.

Conflict complicates epidemic response

Health emergencies are particularly difficult to manage in areas affected by displacement and insecurity because medical teams need safe access and reliable information about where people have moved.
