Japan Protests to US After Marine Arrested on Suspicion of Murder in Okinawa

Tokyo: Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has formally protested to the United States after a US Marine was arrested in Okinawa on suspicion of robbing and killing a Japanese woman.

Japanese police say Lance Corporal Devin Jacob Ballard, 20, is suspected of killing 39-year-old Anna Yagi at a hotel in Naha and taking her belongings. Police said the suspect denied the allegations.

US promises cooperation

The US Embassy and Marine Corps expressed condolences and said they were cooperating with Japanese authorities. Japan has requested maximum cooperation with the investigation as well as measures aimed at preventing a recurrence.

The arrest has renewed attention on longstanding tensions surrounding the large US military presence in Okinawa. The allegations remain under investigation and have not been established by a court.
