Indonesia Arrests Captain After Ferry Disaster That Killed at Least 78

JAKARTA: Indonesian authorities have arrested the captain of a passenger ferry that capsized in the Java Sea in September, a disaster that killed at least 78 people.

Criminal investigation advances

Police said the captain faces criminal proceedings over the disaster. The arrest is an investigative step and does not itself establish guilt; responsibility will be determined through Indonesia’s legal process.

The sinking triggered a major search-and-rescue operation involving the coast guard, navy and other emergency teams.

Maritime safety questions return

Indonesia’s geography makes ferries essential for transportation between islands. Major accidents repeatedly raise questions about passenger limits, vessel condition, weather assessment and regulatory enforcement.
