NEW DELHI — Several parts of India are expected to experience rain, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds during the first week of October, according to the latest weather outlook from the India Meteorological Department.
States under watch
The forecast includes parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, the Northeast and several southern and western states.
Rainfall will vary
The national forecast does not mean every location will receive the same amount of rain. Weather systems can produce heavy showers in one district while nearby areas remain relatively dry.
Thunderstorms
Thunderstorms can produce lightning, strong winds and short periods of intense rainfall. Residents should follow local warnings and avoid exposed areas during lightning.
Farmers
Farmers may need to adjust harvesting and storage plans around local rain forecasts. Heavy rain can affect standing crops and transport.
Travel
Road and air travel can be affected temporarily by heavy rain and low visibility. Travellers should check local forecasts before journeys.
Urban areas
Short periods of intense rainfall can create waterlogging in cities with limited drainage capacity.
The bigger picture
India’s post-monsoon weather remains regionally complex. Even though the overall monsoon has ended below average, individual weather systems can still produce significant rainfall.
