KYIV: German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in Kyiv on October 4 with a major new support package for Ukraine and plans to finalise expanded cooperation on drone production.
Military and energy assistance
German government officials said the package includes €1 billion in military aid and €350 million for repairs to Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. Merz travelled with Economy Minister Katherina Reiche and executives from major German defence and energy companies.
A key focus is expected to be joint production of interceptor drones and other defence technology. Germany is also pressing Kyiv to continue reforms sought by European Union partners.
European security at centre of visit
Merz said Germany’s support is linked to the wider security of Europe as Russia’s war against Ukraine continues. Moscow says its recent strikes are retaliation for Ukrainian attacks.
