England Avoid India and Australia in 2027 World Cup Group Stage: Full Fixtures and Road Ahead

England will not face defending champions Australia or 2023 finalists India during the group stage of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027, handing Harry Brook’s side a very different opening route through a tournament that has been redesigned for its return to Africa. The schedule confirmed by the International Cricket Council places England in Group B alongside New Zealand, co-hosts South Africa, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Qualifier B.

The draw does not make England’s task straightforward. Three established ODI forces — New Zealand, South Africa and Sri Lanka — are in the same group, while Bangladesh have repeatedly shown they can disrupt major tournaments. The key difference is that England avoid India, Australia and Pakistan until a possible Super 7 meeting.

England’s confirmed World Cup 2027 group

Group B contains New Zealand, South Africa, Sri Lanka, England, Bangladesh and Qualifier B. Group A contains India, Australia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Zimbabwe and Qualifier A. The group phase begins after the three-match Super Series in Windhoek determines the final team entering the main group stage.

England World Cup 2027 fixtures

  • October 8: England vs Bangladesh — Windhoek
  • October 13: England vs Sri Lanka — Windhoek
  • October 16: England vs South Africa — Bloemfontein
  • October 20: England vs Qualifier B — Durban
  • October 23: England vs New Zealand — Gqeberha

That itinerary gives England two early games in Namibia before the campaign moves into South Africa. The final two matches could become especially important because qualification is not limited simply to the top two. The top three from each group advance to the Super 7, while the better fourth-placed team across the two groups also progresses.

Why avoiding India and Australia matters — and why it does not guarantee anything

India and Australia are two of the biggest names in 50-over cricket and meet in Cape Town on October 7 in a repeat of the 2023 final. England will not have to deal with either during their five group matches. Pakistan and Afghanistan are also on the other side of the draw. That separation can shape preparation because England can focus entirely on Group B opponents during the opening phase.

However, the new competition structure prevents teams from treating the group draw as the whole story. Seven teams reach the next round and group-stage points are wiped clean. In the Super 7, every remaining side plays six matches. England could therefore encounter India, Australia or Pakistan later even though none appears on their initial schedule.

A fresh start in the Super 7

The absence of carried-over points is one of the most significant features of the 2027 format. A team that dominates its group does not take that numerical advantage forward, while a side that squeezes through receives a fresh table. The Super 7 runs from October 25 to November 14, with the top four progressing to the semi-finals.

England have been assigned the AB4 pre-seeded position for scheduling purposes. Pre-seeding does not guarantee qualification or a finishing position. If another team qualifies in place of a seeded side, it takes that schedule slot. The system is designed to give supporters greater certainty about possible venues while preserving qualification through results.

Bangladesh first, New Zealand last

England begin against Bangladesh in Windhoek on October 8. Starting well will matter in a short five-game group phase where a couple of defeats can quickly reshape the table. Sri Lanka follow at the same venue five days later. England then face co-hosts South Africa in Bloemfontein before playing Qualifier B in Durban and closing against New Zealand at St George’s Park in Gqeberha.

The sequence creates an interesting rhythm: two matches in Namibia, followed by three games in South Africa. Conditions, travel and adapting between venues could become as important as the headline opponents. South Africa’s home familiarity and New Zealand’s tournament record add weight to the second half of England’s group campaign.

What England are ultimately playing for

Reaching the Super 7 is only the second step. The top four teams in that seven-team league advance to the semi-finals. First plays fourth and second plays third. Cape Town hosts the first semi-final on November 17, Tshwane the second on November 18, and the Wanderers in Johannesburg stages the final on November 21.

The tournament contains 57 matches across 12 venues in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. It is the first Men’s ODI World Cup staged in Africa since 2003 and Namibia’s first senior ICC tournament as a host. Bottom line

England have avoided India and Australia in the group stage, but their route still contains three heavyweight assignments against New Zealand, South Africa and Sri Lanka. The redesigned format also means the biggest cross-group contests can arrive later in the Super 7. England’s immediate objective is simple: finish among Group B’s top three, or secure the stronger fourth-place record, and earn the right to enter the tournament’s decisive second league phase.
