SAN JOSÉ | October 17, 2026. Costa Rica received 118,888 international visitors in September 2026, down 2.4% from the same month a year earlier, according to Costa Rican Tourism Institute figures reported by The Tico Times.

What the figures and reports show

The United States sent 55,207 visitors, a 3.3% decline. Air arrivals slipped 1.7% to 102,474. Juan Santamaría airport near San José recorded 77,644 visitors, down 5.4%, while Liberia airport welcomed 24,801, an 11.8% rise.

Why this matters

The contrasting airport figures show that tourism trends vary sharply by region. The overall September decline followed a weaker August, but one or two months do not establish the full-year outcome. Hotels, airlines and local tourism operators will watch whether the weakness persists during the next travel season.
