Wayanad, Kerala | Special Feature: In a world increasingly defined by smartphones, wealth and online popularity, Padma Shri Cheruvayal Raman offered another measure of a meaningful life: what we preserve for those who come after us. The tribal farmer from Kerala, celebrated for conserving more than 55 indigenous rice varieties, passed away on October 14, 2026.

A lifetime devoted to seeds

Belonging to Wayanad’s Kurichiya community, Raman developed a deep understanding of traditional farming. As indigenous paddy varieties became increasingly rare, he worked to keep them alive. Rather than simply selling seeds, he shared them with farmers and encouraged the return of an equivalent quantity after harvest. His work showed that cooperation can protect agricultural heritage.

Lessons for a smartphone generation

We can scroll through photographs of green fields without ever touching the soil. Raman’s simple, nature-centered life invites us to reconsider that distance. The specific claim that he never used a phone throughout his life has not been independently verified. The enduring lesson is not to reject technology, but to ensure that it never replaces attention, responsibility and meaningful action.

Recognition without losing his roots

In 2023, India honoured Raman with the Padma Shri for his contribution to agriculture. His recognition also highlighted the value of traditional knowledge held by indigenous communities.

What should we learn?

Live simply. Protect indigenous seeds. Share knowledge generously. Respect farmers and food. Conserve water, plant trees and preserve fertile land for future generations. Agricultural varieties should be selected with local expert guidance rather than assuming every traditional seed is drought-resistant.

A living tribute

For drought-affected regions, including parts of Maharashtra, his legacy is a call to strengthen water conservation, biodiversity protection and community action. A tree cared for, water saved and a farmer supported can be a more meaningful tribute than words alone.
