Argentina’s Economic Activity Falls 1.4% as Manufacturing and Retail Weaken

BUENOS AIRES: Argentina’s economic activity fell 1.4% in July compared with a year earlier, according to official statistics, highlighting uneven conditions despite progress in reducing inflation.

Manufacturing drops 4.6%

Eight of the 15 sectors tracked by the official EMAE activity index contracted. Wholesale and retail trade and repairs fell 5.1%, while manufacturing declined 4.6% year-on-year.

Fishing and mining were among the strongest sectors, illustrating how Argentina’s recovery remains uneven across the economy.

Government seeks broader growth

President Javier Milei’s administration has sharply reduced public spending as part of its inflation and fiscal strategy. The IMF has said growth needs to broaden beyond energy, mining and agriculture.
