NAIROBI — Food security remains a major concern across parts of Africa as conflict, displacement, high input costs and changing weather patterns affect agricultural production and food distribution.
Conflict and farming
Armed conflict can prevent farmers from planting or harvesting crops. It can also damage roads, markets and storage facilities, making it harder for food to reach consumers.
Displacement
Millions of people across Africa have been displaced by conflict. Displacement often separates households from farmland and increases dependence on humanitarian assistance.
Climate pressures
Droughts, floods and extreme temperatures can reduce yields. Farmers increasingly need access to drought-resistant seeds, irrigation and reliable weather information.
Food prices
When local production falls, countries may rely more heavily on imports. Global grain prices, shipping costs and currency movements can then affect domestic food inflation.
Regional trade
African governments are working to improve cross-border agricultural trade. Better transport links can allow surplus-producing regions to supply areas experiencing shortages.
Humanitarian response
International agencies are providing food, cash assistance and agricultural support in crisis areas. Funding shortages can limit the scale of these programmes.
Long-term solutions
Investment in irrigation, storage, roads and agricultural technology can make food systems more resilient. Local processing can also reduce dependence on imported food products.
The bigger picture
Africa’s food-security challenges are increasingly connected to security, climate and international trade. The response requires both emergency assistance and long-term agricultural investment.
