UN Refugee Agency Warns Funding Crisis Could Leave 8.3 Million People Without Aid

GENEVA: The United Nations refugee agency has warned that a severe funding crisis could leave nearly 8.3 million refugees and forcibly displaced people without vital assistance this year.

According to Reuters, UNHCR faces a funding gap of about $5.789 billion. By July, it had received only 32% of the $8.505 billion required for 2026. The agency expects the population under its mandate to reach 131.2 million by the end of the year.

UNHCR says the funding pressure is already affecting refugee registration, child protection and services for survivors of gender-based violence. The agency has also reduced its workforce and closed offices as it seeks to cut costs.
