Jalna/Representative: Water conservation work aimed at preventing rainwater runoff and promoting groundwater recharge has begun at the Police Training Centre in Jalna. District Collector Ashima Mittal inaugurated the initiative on Saturday.
The project is being carried out under the guidance of Police Training Centre Principal Ashok Bankar, with technical guidance from groundwater expert Dr Pandit Vasare of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Jalna. Police trainees are actively participating in the initiative through voluntary labour, while the Kundalika-Sina Foundation is also extending its support.
Trenches and Recharge Pits Being Constructed
As part of the project, trenches-cum-bunds are being constructed along natural drainage channels to slow down the flow of rainwater and prevent runoff. Large recharge pits are also being created at locations through which rainwater naturally flows.
At the time of the inauguration, 10 recharge pits and 20 trenches-cum-bunds had already been completed. A total of 25 recharge pits and 50 trenches-cum-bunds will be constructed across the Police Training Centre premises.
Aim to Recharge Groundwater
The conservation measures are expected to help retain millions of litres of rainwater within the premises and allow it to gradually percolate into the ground. This will contribute to groundwater recharge and is expected to improve the groundwater table in the surrounding areas.
Earlier Water Conservation Works
Several watershed development works have previously been undertaken at the Police Training Centre. These include percolation tanks, wells and compartment bunding, carried out through Nutan Desai, trustee of Samast Mahajan Sanstha.
These earlier initiatives have also benefited residential areas located around the training centre by helping improve water availability and groundwater conditions.
Police Training Centre RPI Keshav Girdkar, Kundalika-Sina Foundation’s Uday Shinde, social worker Dr Vitthal Rajkar, Samast Mahajan Sanstha’s Arvind Naiknavare, along with officers and staff of the Police Training Centre, were present during the inauguration.
The initiative is expected to strengthen water conservation efforts in the area while creating greater awareness among police trainees about the importance of rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharge.
