Australia Proposes Tougher Rules for New Data Centres in Victoria

Melbourne, September 28, 2026: Victoria has proposed tougher rules for new data centres, including requirements for operators to secure renewable energy and storage.

The proposed rules would also require data-centre developers to cover power connection and network upgrade costs. New facilities would face restrictions on locations near schools, childcare centres and residential areas.

Australia is preparing for rapid growth in digital infrastructure as demand from artificial intelligence and cloud computing increases. The Victorian proposal also includes requirements related to water use and traffic.
