US citizens planning international travel should check passport expiration dates well before booking. The US Department of State offers several renewal routes, but the right process depends on the applicant’s passport and circumstances.
Who can renew?
Many adults can renew an eligible passport by mail or through the Department of State’s online renewal service, subject to current eligibility requirements. A passport issued to a child under age 16 generally cannot be renewed; the applicant must apply for a new passport using the appropriate process.
Online, mail or in-person?
Start with the State Department renewal instructions. The department explains who qualifies for online renewal, who should use Form DS-82 by mail, and when an in-person application using Form DS-11 is necessary. Do not use unofficial websites that charge for access to free government forms.
Fees and processing times
Passport book and card fees differ, and expedited service costs extra. Processing times can change with demand and do not include all mailing time. Check the official fee schedule and current processing times rather than relying on old estimates.
Travel rules and common mistakes
Some destinations require several months of passport validity beyond travel dates. Verify destination-specific entry requirements before departure. Double-check your name, photograph, supporting documents and payment method. If travel is urgent, consult the State Department’s official urgent-travel appointment guidance.
Updated October 29, 2026. Government eligibility rules, fees and processing times may change; always check official agency guidance before applying.
