PRISTINA: Kosovo’s parliament elected economist and academic Justina Shiroka Pula as president early Wednesday, resolving a political standoff just before a constitutional deadline that could have triggered another snap election.

One vote above the threshold

Shiroka Pula received 81 votes in the 120-seat assembly, one more than required. Although Kosovo’s presidency is largely ceremonial, electing a head of state requires broad parliamentary support and has repeatedly become a source of political instability.

The vote followed an agreement between Prime Minister Albin Kurti’s Vetevendosje and the opposition Democratic Party of Kosovo. Shiroka Pula, an economics professor and president of Kosovo’s Academy of Sciences and Arts, said she would serve all citizens.
