Chinese Workers Raise Concerns Over Weekend Shifts Before National Day Holiday

BEIJING, September 29, 2026: Some Chinese workers are raising concerns about weekend work and holiday schedules as the country approaches its week-long National Day holiday, according to Reuters.

Reuters reported that discussions about mandatory weekend shifts generated significant attention on Chinese social media. Related topics on Weibo had more than 360 million views, the report said.

Reuters also reported that labor-dispute cases had risen 37.5% year-on-year during the first nine months of 2025, citing data in its report.

Holiday work debate

China’s National Day holiday is one of the country’s major annual travel periods. Companies and employees sometimes adjust working schedules around public holidays, creating additional weekend working days in exchange for longer breaks.

The current debate reflects broader questions about working hours, overtime and employees’ ability to take legally provided rest days.

Social media discussion

Labor-related topics can attract large audiences on Chinese social platforms, where employees discuss working conditions and holiday schedules. Reuters reported that an app called “Weekend Off Shopping” was later shut down by authorities for regulatory violations.

Employment remains an economic issue

Employment and household income are also among the issues Chinese policymakers are addressing as they seek to support domestic consumption and economic activity.

China’s cabinet recently called for measures supporting employment, income growth and consumption alongside wider economic policy support. Read NewsNationOnline’s latest report.
